Dr Samantha Hargreaves

MBBS (Hons), FRANZCOG

Obstetrician & Gynaecologist

Dr Samantha Hargreaves is an experienced obstetrician and gynaecologist based in Melbourne.

She offers over 25+ years of consultant-level expertise in obstetrics, gynaecology, minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery and women’s reproductive health. Warm, calm and deeply knowledgeable, Sam is known for her ability to listen carefully, explain clearly and provide thoughtful, evidence-based care tailored to each woman’s individual needs.

Her clinical practice is based in East Melbourne, where she diagnoses and manages a comprehensive range of gynaecological conditions. Although she has delivered more than 5,000+ babies over her career, her practice today focuses primarily on gynaecology and minimally invasive surgery, with a small, selective obstetric offering for those patients seeking the utmost personalised care.

Women choose Dr Hargreaves not only for her expertise, but for her kind, grounded and reassuring presence – a combination that is especially valued when navigating sensitive or complex health concerns. Dr Hargreaves’ expertise spans both general gynaecology and advanced laparoscopic surgery, allowing her to address, and treat, a wide range of complex gynaecological conditions and avoid the need for on-referring.

Dr Hargreaves holds several senior appointments across Melbourne’s major public and private hospitals, reflecting her standing as a respected clinician, educator and surgical leader. She currently serves as:

  • Senior Gynaecologist, Endometriosis & Pelvic Pain Clinic, Royal Women’s Hospital Melbourne
  • Deputy Chair of the Board, Barbara May Foundation
  • Executive Committee Member, Obstetric & Gynaecology Institute, Epworth Freemasons
  • Senior Lecturer, University of Melbourne
  • Member, Medical Panels Victoria

These roles underscore her long-term commitment to improving women’s health, training the next generation of doctors, and contributing to high-level discussions on clinical excellence, hospital governance and women’s health outcomes.

A Melbourne local, Dr Hargreaves studied at Monash University, graduating with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) with Honours. She commenced O&G training across Melbourne and Geelong, before travelling to the UK to complete her training in general obstetrics and gynaecology. Upon return to Australia, she obtained her Fellowship of the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists (FRANZCOG).

While Dr Hargreaves practises broadly across gynaecology, she is particularly recognised for her advanced skill in minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery. Over her decades of experience, she has performed a wide range of procedures, from routine laparoscopic operations to highly complex cases involving endometriosis, fibroids, ovarian masses and polyps.

Dr Hargreaves also has considerable experience in open gynaecological surgery, allowing her to manage complex cases safely when a minimally invasive approach is not appropriate. She continues to refine her surgical skills through ongoing professional development, attending AGES workshops, RANZRCOG conferences, and multiple national and international surgical meetings.

Outside of clinical work, Dr Hargreaves enjoys cycling, skiing and travel – pursuits that reflect her energy, curiosity and appreciation of the world beyond the consulting room.

Personal Q&As

I enjoy caring for women at significant times of their life – adolescence, pregnancy, menopause. I was attracted to a specialty where surgery, endocrinology and psychology were all important.

Has to be delivering a healthy baby!!!! A close second is a difficult laparoscopy where the patient recovers very quickly.

I had the privilege of working with a number of individuals who had the knack of treating every woman – be they public / private / difficult / easy with dignity, compassion and respect. I try to remember that on a daily basis.

Cycling, travel, spending time with my family.
